South Australian summers don't whisper. They roar.
When temperatures climb into the high 30s and 40s, your skin isn't just "a little dry" — it's under real stress. Dehydration, inflammation, congestion, breakouts, pigmentation flare-ups… heatwaves can undo weeks of good skincare in a matter of days.
But with the right approach, your skin can not only survive a heatwave — it can stay calm, balanced and glowing.
Here's how.
Hydration Is Non-Negotiable (Inside and Out)
Heat pulls moisture from your skin faster than you realise.
That tight, slightly itchy feeling? That's dehydration.
What to do:
- Increase your water intake (more than you think you need)
- Swap heavy creams for lightweight hydrating serums
- Look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid and aloe vera
- Use a gentle hydrating mist throughout the day
Hydrated skin is resilient skin.
Rethink Your Moisturiser
In extreme heat, thick occlusive creams can feel suffocating — and can even contribute to congestion.
Instead:
- Move to a lighter gel or lotion-based moisturiser
- Apply smaller amounts, more frequently if needed
- Don't skip moisturiser entirely (this actually makes dehydration worse)
Skin still needs protection — just not heaviness.
SPF. Every. Single. Day.
Even if you're "just ducking out."
Heatwaves usually mean stronger UV, and sun exposure during extreme temperatures can trigger:
- Pigmentation
- Premature ageing
- Sensitivity
- Broken capillaries
Apply a broad-spectrum SPF 50+ every morning and reapply if you're outdoors.
Your future skin will thank you.
Our favourite products is the Aspect Envirostat 50, which you can pick up at either our Unley or Semaphore locations. It's non greasy and long-lasting.
Avoid Over-Exfoliating
When skin feels sweaty or congested, the temptation is to scrub it into submission. Don't. Heat already compromises your skin barrier. Over-exfoliating during a heatwave can cause:
- Redness
- Sensitivity
- Breakouts
- Barrier damage
Stick to gentle cleansing and minimal active ingredients while temperatures are extreme.
Calm Inflammation Early
If your skin starts to feel hot, flushed, or reactive — treat it immediately.
Cooling masks, calming serums, and professional hydration facials can prevent long-term damage and rebalance stressed skin quickly.
Don't Forget Your Body
Your face isn't the only area exposed. Heatwaves can leave the body feeling dry, irritated and dull.
Gentle exfoliation followed by a nourishing body moisturiser (or a professional body treatment like our Hydrotherapy Vichy Shower experience) can completely reset heat-stressed skin.
Sometimes skin needs more than home care. If your skin feels unbalanced, dehydrated or reactive after extreme heat, a professional treatment can restore hydration, calm inflammation and strengthen your barrier properly.
At Temple Day Spa, our therapists are trained to adjust treatments seasonally — because South Australian skin has very different needs in February than it does in July.
Heatwaves are intense. But your skin doesn't have to suffer for it.
Treat it gently. Hydrate consistently. Protect it fiercely. And if it feels overwhelmed — that's your sign to book in.
Your skin deserves support too.
